Recess for adult? Harnessing fun to heal from anxiety and depression.

In our rapidly evolving world, we need to harness fun to heal from anxiety and depression. Since technology often dominates our daily lives, the significance of play and recess can sometimes be overshadowed. However, both children and adults stand to gain immensely from engaging in fun to heal from anxiety and depression.

I know you know this- but just to be clear: when kids play during recess, they’re not just having fun – they’re also boosting their brains. They’re learning how to be a human in the world. They get to use their imagination, solve problems, and make decisions all on their own. Let’s not forget about making friends. Recess is where kids learn how to be good pals, sharing, taking turns, and talking things out. It’s like a mini social skills boot camp!

Now, onto something you might NOT know- while play is commonly associated with childhood, its significance extends into adulthood. Engaging in playful pursuits offers myriad mental health benefits, enabling adults to strike a balance between work and leisure while enhancing overall well-being. Especially with this crazy weather we’ve been having- not to mention the benefits of exposure to natural sunlight, now is the perfect time to get out and do something!

1. Stress Relief, Relaxation and improved mental health outcomes:

Playful activities provide a much-needed respite from the rigors of adult life, offering stress relief and promoting relaxation. Whether it involves sports, hobbies, or creative endeavors, play alleviates stress, fosters relaxation, and rejuvenates the mind. It serves as a vital escape from the demands of work, allowing adults to recharge and refocus. A recent study showed that not just exercise, but specifically DANCING, (which some may argue is a way to play for adults) has the largest effect of ANY TREATMENT for depression! That is REMARKABLE!

2. Enhancing Creativity and Problem-Solving:

Playfulness fuels creativity, empowering adults to tackle challenges with fresh perspectives. Immersion in activities that stimulate curiosity and imagination unlocks innovative thinking and problem-solving prowess. Play encourages adaptability, flexible thinking, and the ability to navigate ambiguity, all of which are invaluable skills in various spheres of life. Dancing to shake of depression, stress and anxiety? We’re in!

3. Connecting with Others:

Play strengthens social bonds among adults, fostering friendships and nurturing a sense of community. Engaging in recreational activities together fosters camaraderie, collaboration, and positive social interactions. Shared interests and hobbies serve as catalysts for meaningful connections, enriching the fabric of social relationships.
