Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has long been a go-to therapy for trauma healing. Recently, however, a new variation called Flash EMDR has emerged, offering a unique and often gentler approach to processing distressing memories. Therefore, if you’re considering therapy and wondering if Flash EMDR might be right for you, read on to learn more about what to expect and how it differs from traditional EMDR.
What is Flash EMDR?
Flash EMDR modifies the standard EMDR protocol to reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories in a less distressing way. During Flash EMDR, clients briefly think about a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as following the therapist’s finger with their eyes or listening to alternating tones. Unlike traditional EMDR, Flash EMDR quickly shifts focus from the traumatic memory to a more neutral or positive thought.
What to Expect During Session
Preparation: Your therapist will begin by explaining the process and ensuring you feel comfortable. They will help you identify a positive or neutral focus to use during the session.
Brief Exposure: You will be asked to briefly think about the traumatic memory, but only for a few seconds. This is a significant difference from traditional EMDR, where you might spend more time processing the distressing event.
Bilateral Stimulation: While briefly thinking about the memory, you will engage in bilateral stimulation. This helps your brain process the memory more effectively.
Shift Focus: After a few seconds, you will be guided to shift your focus to the positive or neutral thought. This helps reduce the emotional intensity associated with the traumatic memory.
Repeat: This process is repeated several times during the session, with the goal of decreasing the distress associated with the memory.
How Flash EMDR Differs from Traditional EMDR
Gentler Approach: Flash EMDR is designed to be less distressing, as it minimizes the time spent focusing on the traumatic memory.
Quick Shifts: The frequent shifts to positive or neutral thoughts can make the process feel faster and less intense.
Effective for Complex Trauma: Flash EMDR can be particularly helpful for individuals with complex trauma, as it reduces the risk of overwhelming emotions.
Flexibility: This approach can be used as a standalone treatment or as a precursor to traditional EMDR, depending on the client’s needs and comfort level.
