The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a 5-hour therapeutic music-based intervention designed by Dr. Stephen Porges based on Polyvagal Theory to help calm the nervous system.
At Bright Spot Counseling, we know trauma doesn’t just live in your memories—it lives in your central nervous system (CNS). When your CNS is stuck in “survival mode,” it can make it hard to feel safe, connected, or calm, even when you logically know the danger has passed. That’s why we offer two powerful, evidence-based tools to help reset your nervous system and prepare your mind and body for deeper healing: the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and the Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP) from Unyte.
These approaches are designed to speed healing, improve emotional regulation, and help you get more out of therapy—whether you’re starting EMDR, polyvagal therapy, or another trauma-focused approach.
Why the Central Nervous System Matters in Trauma Recovery
Your CNS is like your body’s control center, constantly sending messages between your brain and body. When you experience trauma, your CNS can get “stuck” in hyperarousal (fight-or-flight) or shutdown (freeze). This dysregulation can lead to:
- Chronic anxiety or hypervigilance
- Emotional numbness or detachment
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering
- Sleep disturbances
- Muscle tension and chronic stress
- Physical symptoms like headaches or GI distress
While talk therapy is important, it’s harder to process and integrate change if your nervous system is still on high alert. SSP and RRP help calm and regulate your CNS, creating a stronger foundation for lasting healing.
Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and based on Polyvagal Theory, SSP uses specially filtered music to gently stimulate the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in calming the nervous system. The music is fun to listen to and carefully designed to help your brain feel safe again. When the nervous system is calm, the brain can form new, positive connections—creating a stronger foundation for:
- New learning and skill-building
- Stability during major life transitions
- More emotional regulation
- Deeper participation in therapy
SSP works through your middle ear, helping you feel more connected, attuned, and socially engaged. For children, SSP can often be completed in about five sessions. For adults with a history of trauma, we often break listening periods into smaller increments to gently stretch (not overwhelm) the nervous system.
What to Expect in an SSP Session
- You’ll sit comfortably, put on headphones, and listen to specially processed music.
- The music may be quiet at times on purpose, sound muffled, far away, or even slightly off key. This challenges your middle ear and helps it learn to listen for cues of safety.
- Your therapist will monitor you closely for signs of distress or dysregulation and adjust pacing as needed.
- You set the volume at a level you’re comfortable with.
- You remain in control at all times.
We offer different formats based on your needs:
- SSP Classical – Instrumental music without words
- SSP Connect – Untreated music with lyrics
- SSP Core – Treated music with lyrics (main program)
- SSP Balance – Maintenance phase, used 3–6 months after SSP Core if needed
Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP)
The Rest and Restore Protocol from Unyte complements SSP by helping your nervous system shift into the parasympathetic “rest and digest” state—your body’s natural recovery mode. RRP uses guided breathing, gentle sound, and relaxation techniques to:
- Calm the body’s stress response
- Support better sleep
- Encourage physical and emotional recovery
- Make therapy work more deeply and effectively
While SSP focuses on increasing safety, connection, and social engagement, RRP is about helping your nervous system rest and recharge—especially after periods of chronic stress or intense processing in therapy.
Why SSP + RRP Speed Healing
When your nervous system is regulated, therapy can go deeper and progress more quickly. SSP and RRP can:
- Reduce anxiety before starting EMDR or trauma reprocessing
- Lower overwhelm during sessions
- Increase resilience between appointments
- Improve your ability to use coping skills in real life
For many clients, these protocols make the rest of the therapy process feel smoother, less overwhelming, and more effective.
When We Use SSP and RRP
We often introduce SSP early in your treatment roadmap, especially for clients who want to maximize gains in therapy. RRP may be used at the start or in between phases of deeper work to help your body recover and maintain progress.
