As a therapist at Bright Spot Counseling, I often pose the question, “Is that really your responsibility?” This simple yet profound question serves as a powerful tool for fostering self-awareness, especially when clients grapple with perfectionism, anxiety, or the habit of taking on more than they can manage.
Let’s dive deeper into why this question matters. For many, especially those prone to perfectionism and anxiety, there’s a tendency to assume responsibility for everything and everyone around them. This well-intentioned but unhelpful habit can lead to feelings of overwhelm, frustration, and even resentment. In therapy, I use this question as a way to invite clients to explore these tendencies and identify what is—and isn’t—their true responsibility. Through this process, clients learn to let go of burdens that don’t belong to them, creating space for peace and balance.
Here’s Why This Matters:
Setting Boundaries: Reflecting on personal responsibility helps clients establish clear boundaries, distinguishing their needs from the needs and demands of others. These boundaries are essential for maintaining emotional well-being and avoiding burnout.
Reducing Stress: By focusing on what is genuinely within their control, clients learn to reduce stress and anxiety caused by taking on unrealistic expectations or unmanageable burdens.
Improving Relationships: When a person lets go of responsibilities that aren’t theirs, they can foster healthier, more balanced relationships rooted in genuine connection rather than frustration or the sense of being overwhelmed.
Prioritizing Self-Care: Recognizing and honoring personal limits allows clients to prioritize their own well-being, which is essential for maintaining resilience and fulfillment.
