Am I Ready for Change? Embracing the Therapeutic Stages of Change

Embracing Change Voyage Of Self Discovery Bright Spot Blog

Embarking on a therapeutic journey with your therapist is like setting sail on a voyage of self-discovery and personal growth. Your therapist is there to help you read the map (not be captain of the ship! That’s YOUR JOB, SILLY!) and travel through the various stages of change that you may encounter along the way.

Sometimes we think we’re ready, (“I made the call, of course I’m ready!”) but the recommendations and suggestions from the therapist may sound scary or provoke feelings of anxiety. Sometimes they sound ultra do-able, but when it comes time to implement, we freeze up or reengage with bad habits or old depressive behaviors that lead to familiar and uncomfortable outcomes.

As much as we’d all love to arrive at our destination with ease- knowing where we’re on the map of change is a part of the journey, for both the client and their therapist. These stages are an integral part of the therapeutic process, and understanding them can help you make the most of your therapeutic experience. Read on to find out what you might experience in each stage, as well as strengthen your understanding of your therapist’s role along the way.

Stage 1: Precontemplation

In this initial stage, you may not even be aware of the need for change. Maybe someone told you to see a therapist and you’re not sure why. You might feel comfortable with your current situation or not recognize the issues that could benefit from therapy. Your therapist’s role here is to create a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore your thoughts and emotions, helping you realize the potential for positive change.

Stage 2: Contemplation

At this point, you’re considering the possibility of change but may still have reservations or uncertainties. It’s perfectly normal to feel ambivalent about seeking therapy or even skeptical that you need it. Your therapist is here to listen and provide support as you weigh the pros and cons, helping you gain clarity and confidence in your decision.

Stage 3: Preparation

Once you’ve made the decision to embark on this journey, we’ll work together to set clear therapeutic goals and establish a plan. This stage is about readiness and commitment to change. You and your therapist will collaborate closely, preparing you for the work ahead. You totally have a say in your treatment plan- remember, you are the captain of the ship, think of your therapist as the first mate 🙂

Stage 4: Action

In this stage, you begin actively working toward your therapeutic goals. You and your therapist will explore strategies and interventions tailored to your unique needs and circumstances. Progress may not always be linear, but with dedication and support, you’ll make strides toward positive change.

Stage 5: Maintenance

As you make progress and experience positive changes, it’s crucial to sustain and build upon your achievements (and recognize and reflect on them!). Your therapist will continue to provide guidance and help you develop the skills and resilience needed to maintain your newfound well-being.

Stage 6: Termination

Reaching this stage means you’ve achieved your therapeutic goals, and it’s time to transition from regular therapy sessions. It’s a celebration of your growth and transformation. Your therapist will work with you to ensure a smooth transition, equipping you with tools to navigate life’s challenges independently.

At Bright Spot Therapy in Farmington Hills, Michigan, we are here to support you at every stage of your therapeutic journey. Our dedicated team of therapists is committed to helping you navigate the path to positive change and personal growth.
